Artist Erik Desmazières
Erik Desmazières, (1948, FR, Rabat Morocco) is considered one of the great contemporary printmakers, and has had many major museum retrospectives in Europe, Canada and the United States. Desmazières is an intaglio printmaker of the Art Fantastique school, whose artists find their aesthetic antecedents in Bresdin, Piranesi, Callot and Durer.Desmazières resides in Paris and is a graduate of the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris and studied printmaking at the Cours du Soir de la Ville de Paris. He has served as president of La Societe des Peintres Graveurs Francais. His etching depictions in the period 1970-1990 formed the fantasy characterizations for the J.R.R. Tolkien's film version of Lord of the Rings.
Desmazières's etchings have an ethereal quality due to his close attention to detail and his grasp of atmospheric light. His works are included in major museum collections around the world including retrospectives at the Rembrandthuis Museum (Amsterdam, 2004-05) Musée Carnavalet ( Paris, 2006-07)Musée Jenisch (Vevey, Switzerland 2007) .
